Kadamtala: A suspected case of deliberate poisoning at a mosque pond in Kadamtala Bazar, North Tripura district, has triggered widespread anger after nearly 10 quintals of fish were found dead on Sunday morning, with losses estimated at over a lakh rupees.
According to the Bazar Mosque Committee, the incident is believed to have taken place on Saturday night, when unidentified miscreants allegedly poured pesticide-like chemicals into the pond under cover of darkness. Committee members were shocked to find the pond’s surface covered with dead fish when they arrived the next morning.
Police from Kadamtala station reached the spot after being alerted and examined the scene, though no arrests have been made so far. To avert any environmental hazard, mosque committee members buried the dead fish in a pit dug near the pond bank.
Committee members have strongly condemned the act, calling it unprecedented, and have appealed to the administration to launch a thorough probe to identify and punish the culprits.
The incident has reignited concerns over law and order in the bazar area, with residents citing a series of recent thefts at local shops despite night patrolling. Locals have urged authorities to step up vigilance, warning that continued inaction could threaten the region’s communal harmony.
