AGARTALA: Police have detained two Bangladeshi nationals on charges of illegal entry into Indian territory, in an operation carried out under the Debdaru Fari police station area of South Tripura district.
Acting on confidential information, police intercepted and searched a passenger bus plying through the area, leading to the detention of the duo. The detained persons comprise one man and one woman, who, according to police sources, are residents of Chattogram in Bangladesh.
Officials said the operation was carried out following specific intelligence inputs regarding the movement of suspected illegal immigrants through the route. Following their detention, the duo is reportedly being questioned by police to ascertain the purpose and circumstances of their alleged entry into Indian territory without valid documents.
South Tripura district, sharing a long border with Bangladesh, has in the past witnessed several similar incidents of illegal cross-border movement, with security agencies maintaining vigil along vulnerable stretches.
