TELIAMURA: A massive tree crashed onto the residence of Tripura Police SPO jawan Arjun Das at Gamaibari in Teliamura around 10:30 PM on Wednesday, partially destroying the house and sending family members fleeing in panic, even as the subdivisional disaster management team allegedly failed to respond in time.
Although the family immediately alerted the Teliamura subdivisional administration, only one volunteer was initially sent — reportedly without any tree-cutting equipment — while other equipped volunteers remained stranded at the SDM office for nearly two hours awaiting transport, as the department has no dedicated vehicle. Volunteers eventually reached the spot on motorcycles, triggering anger among residents over the delay.
Locals alleged this is not an isolated lapse, citing the 2025 death of truck driver Mihir Debnath and the deaths of two labourers in a Chakmaghat landslide, both attributed to the disaster team’s alleged unpreparedness. Residents also questioned the utility of a recent mock disaster drill funded from public money, given the gap exposed during this incident.
DCM Genius Debbarma, who oversees disaster management for the subdivision, was reportedly not present at the site even after the incident, drawing further criticism of the administration’s response.
