Agartala: In a major healthcare reform, the Tripura Cabinet has approved a ban on private practice by doctors serving at Agartala Government Medical College (AGMC) and Govind Ballabh Pant (GB Pant) Hospital.
The decision was taken during a Cabinet meeting chaired by Chief Minister Dr. Manik Saha, who also holds the Health portfolio.
To offset the impact of the restriction, the state government has sanctioned a special 20 per cent salary hike for doctors working at the two premier government healthcare institutions.
The government said the move is aimed at ensuring the full-time availability of doctors in government hospitals, improving patient care, reducing waiting times, and strengthening the quality of public healthcare services.
Officials believe the decision will enhance healthcare delivery by allowing doctors to devote their complete professional attention to government medical institutions while providing financial compensation through the revised pay structure.
Further guidelines regarding the implementation of the new policy are expected to be issued by the Health Department in the coming days.
