Agartala: A 27-year-old club secretary was allegedly hacked to death late Monday night in Kathaltali under Amtali Police Station, triggering outrage and a heavy security deployment across the area.
Samir Das, Secretary of Tarun Sangha Club, was returning home on his scooter around 11:30 p.m. when he was allegedly intercepted near Kathaltali Shani Mandir by accused Swapan Sutradhar, alias “Sappa,” and an accomplice. The attackers allegedly assaulted him with sharp weapons, killing him on the spot. The accused fled the scene.
Locals who found the body alerted police. Officer-in-Charge Inspector Paritosh Das reached the spot with police and TSR personnel. A forensic team examined the site, and the body was sent to Tripura Medical College Hospital, Hapania, for post-mortem.
The victim’s family alleged he had received threats for months over a personal and financial dispute. His sister claimed the accused had made earlier attempts on his life.
Angry crowds gathered Tuesday, demanding swift arrest, and allegedly vandalised one accused’s residence. Police have registered a murder case, arrested co-accused Mithun Sutradhar, and launched a manhunt for Sutradhar, who remains absconding. Additional forces have been deployed to maintain order.
