CHARILAM: Residents of Shikharia village under Ward No. 1 of Lalsingmura Gram Panchayat in the Charilam Assembly Constituency are facing severe hardships, having gone without electricity and drinking water for the past seven days.
The crisis traces back to a severe storm when a massive tree collapsed, snapping the main overhead power lines supplying the area. While the immediate structural damage left the village in darkness, it has now triggered an acute water scarcity. Due to the prolonged power outage, the local drinking water pump has completely broken down. The pump operator, Uma Bhowmik, stated that she is unable to run the machinery without electricity, rendering the village’s primary water source useless.
With both taps and power lines dry for a week, frustrated villagers are struggling daily to secure water for drinking and basic household chores. Despite the growing distress, locals allege that the power department has not yet taken concrete steps to repair the snapped lines. The residents have urgently appealed to the concerned authorities to restore electricity on a priority basis and resolve the worsening water crisis before public anger boils over.
