Bamutia: A farmer residing near Chanmuri Bridge on the Agartala-Bamutia main road, under Ward No. 3 of Lakshmilunga Gram Panchayat in Bamutia Block, has alleged suffering repeated losses due to the indiscriminate dumping of garbage by unidentified persons in a stream adjoining his agricultural land.
Farmer Nipendra Sarkar told the media that he owns around two-and-a-half kani of agricultural land beside the bridge, where he cultivates various vegetables to sustain his family. However, unidentified persons have been dumping garbage, bottles and other waste into the adjoining stream under cover of darkness at night.
During the monsoon, the waste is washed into his farmland along with the stream water, damaging his crops, while a foul stench from the accumulated garbage persists through the rest of the year, affecting the surrounding area.
Sarkar said he had brought the matter to the notice of local elected representatives on several occasions, but no remedial action had been taken so far. Frustrated by the inaction, he approached the media to highlight his plight and appealed to the administration to intervene and put an end to the illegal dumping, so that further damage to his livelihood could be prevented.
