SONAMURA: A gang of thieves struck two houses in the Bejimara area late Sunday night, making off with a large quantity of rubber and a bicycle, despite both properties having concrete boundary walls and CCTV cameras installed.
The affected residents have been identified as Sabbir Ahmed and a panchayat member named Akhtar. According to local sources, the thieves managed to breach the boundary wall and enter the premises undetected, escaping with rubber stored in the warehouse. The theft was discovered only the next morning when household members woke up.
A written complaint was filed at Sonamura police station soon after the incident came to light. Police reached the spot and launched an investigation, and are examining CCTV footage in an attempt to identify the culprits.
Locals alleged that incidents of rubber theft have been rising in Bejimara and neighbouring villages in recent times, and demanded increased police patrolling at night. The brazen nature of the theft — carried out despite security measures — has caused considerable concern in the area.
