AGARTALA: Chief Minister Dr. Manik Saha on Monday announced a major expansion of medical education infrastructure in the state, with the Agartala Government Medical College (AGMC) set to increase its MBBS intake capacity from 150 to 250 seats starting the 2026-27 academic year.
The 100-seat increase marks one of the largest single expansions in the college’s history and is expected to significantly boost the number of doctors trained within the state each year. Officials said the move aims to address the growing demand for medical professionals in Tripura and the wider Northeast region, while easing the pressure on aspiring students who currently compete for limited seats.
The expansion is likely to require corresponding upgrades to faculty strength, hospital infrastructure, and clinical training facilities to meet regulatory requirements set by the National Medical Commission. Officials indicated that preparations are already underway to ensure the college meets the necessary standards ahead of the new academic session.
The announcement has been welcomed by medical aspirants and educators alike, who see it as a step toward strengthening healthcare capacity in the state.
