US President Donald Trump on Friday declared that the ceasefire between the United States and Iran is “over,” even as he confirmed that Washington has agreed to continue negotiations with Tehran. The announcement comes amid a week of escalating hostilities, with both sides exchanging strikes across the Gulf region.
Trump said the Islamic Republic of Iran had requested continued dialogue, but insisted the US made clear that the truce no longer stands. In a post on Truth Social, he wrote: “We have agreed to do so, but the United States has stated to them, in no uncertain terms, that the Cease Fire is OVER!”
The declaration follows a series of confrontations. Iran launched drones and missiles at US military infrastructure in Gulf states, including Kuwait, Qatar and Bahrain, after American forces carried out strikes on Iran’s southern coastal and eastern provinces earlier in the week. Washington said its operations were in response to Iranian attacks on commercial shipping in the region.
The two nations had reached an interim deal last month aimed at ending a four‑month conflict that severely disrupted global energy supplies. But low‑level clashes continued, and Trump’s inability to fully halt the fighting has reportedly frustrated him as his Republican Party faces midterm elections later this year amid high fuel prices and voter dissatisfaction.
Speaking in Ankara, Trump also criticised Iranian officials in harsh terms and said he planned to speak with businessman‑turned‑envoy Steve Witkoff and his son‑in‑law Jared Kushner, who have been leading back‑channel contacts with Tehran. He maintained that it was Iran’s responsibility to resume negotiations in good faith.
The renewed tensions have intensified concerns over regional stability, global oil markets and the risk of a broader confrontation as both sides signal readiness for further action.
