The Indian Air Force (IAF) has retained its position as the world’s third‑most powerful air arm in the 2026 global airpower rankings released by the World Directory of Modern Military Aircraft (WDMMA). The latest assessment places India ahead of China’s People’s Liberation Army Air Force (PLAAF) for the fifth consecutive year, reinforcing the IAF’s standing as one of the world’s most capable and versatile air forces.
According to WDMMA, only the United States and Russia rank above India, marking the sixth overall occasion in which the IAF has secured the No. 3 spot. The rankings evaluate 129 air services across 103 countries, analysing more than 48,000 military aircraft worldwide.
WDMMA’s methodology goes beyond simple fleet size. Its True Value Rating (TVR) system measures an air force’s overall combat strength by assessing fleet composition, aircraft mix, technological sophistication, logistical support, modernisation progress, and operational capability. The IAF’s diverse inventory — including fighters, transport aircraft, helicopters, UAVs, and force‑multipliers — contributed significantly to its high score.
The IAF’s ongoing modernisation drive also played a key role. India continues to induct advanced platforms such as the Rafale, upgrade its Su‑30MKI fleet, expand indigenous production through the LCA Tejas, and strengthen air‑defence networks with systems like S‑400. These efforts have helped India maintain a qualitative edge over China despite the PLAAF’s larger numerical strength.
The ranking comes at a time of heightened geopolitical tensions in the Indo‑Pacific, where airpower capability is increasingly central to deterrence and regional stability. India’s sustained position in the top three underscores its growing strategic weight and long‑term commitment to modernising its air combat infrastructure.
