AGARTALA: The Tripura State Fishermen’s Union organised a state-level conference here, bringing together representatives from across the state to press demands for the rights, livelihoods and development of the fishing community.
Delegates called for water bodies to be handed over to fishermen’s cooperative societies, along with regular elections and audits within these cooperatives. Speakers also urged greater financial assistance, higher fish production, and stronger social security measures for fishermen.
The conference highlighted long-standing challenges faced by the fishing community and called for administrative attention to the problems of fishermen in the state’s remote areas. Participants demanded measures to ensure financial security and social dignity for fishermen, while urging the community to move toward self-reliance alongside its fight for rights.
Addressing the gathering, the union’s national-level leader, Sudhan Das, spoke in detail on the issues confronting fishermen, stressing the need to protect their rights, ensure proper management of water bodies, and strengthen the cooperative system.
The conference, attended by representatives from various parts of Tripura, concluded with a pledge to continue united efforts for the welfare of fishermen. Organisers expressed hope that the meeting would chart a new path toward rights, production and development for the fishing community.
