Dharmanagar: Power consumers and employees under the banner of the Electricity Consumers and Employees Welfare Association submitted a deputation on Friday to Sanjib Dasgupta, Senior Manager of Yuvarajnagar Sub-Division, Haflong, protesting the steep rise in electricity charges, additional duty charges, and the forced rollout of smart meters.
In their memorandum, the association objected to the duty and fixed charges added to bills, alleging that load assessments were being used to impose extra financial burden on consumers and businesses without regard to actual usage. They also opposed the new tariff system and prepaid smart meters, warning that time-based tariffs would push bills even higher, and demanded that consumer opinion be prioritised before any policy decision.
The organisation further alleged long-standing neglect of power employees and voiced concern over efforts to privatise the sector, cautioning that this would increase exploitation of the public.
Key demands included immediate withdrawal of the price hike, an end to unjustified load charges, reconsideration of the smart meter policy, and a stronger consumer grievance mechanism.
Ajay Dev, Subhash Roy, and former MLA Amitabha Dutta were among those present. The Tripura Electricity Regulatory Commission’s 2026-27 tariff order is already available on the TSECL website.
