Agartala: A theft at a temple in the Khushbagan area of Hawkers Corner, barely 100 metres from West Police Station, has caused a stir in the locality. Miscreants reportedly broke into the temple under cover of darkness, smashed open the donation box, and fled with cash and other valuables.
According to local sources, the temple was closed as usual after evening rituals, but when it was opened the next morning, the donation box was found broken and parts of the premises left in disarray.
Police were alerted and rushed to the spot to begin a preliminary probe, examining the surrounding area and possible entry and exit points. An investigation, led by West Police Station OC Sanjit Sen, is underway to identify those responsible.
The theft occurring so close to the police station has raised questions over local security, with residents expressing concern about safety in other parts of the city if such an incident could happen virtually at the station’s doorstep.
Police are yet to ascertain the exact value of the stolen cash and items, and are examining whether CCTV footage from the temple or nearby areas is available. Locals have demanded swift identification and arrest of the culprits.
