DHARMANAGAR: Security concerns have gripped this North Tripura town after allegations surfaced that all of the roughly 94 CCTV cameras installed across the area have remained non-functional for the past one to two months, coinciding with a reported rise in theft incidents.
The cameras, installed at key junctions, markets, government offices, hospitals, and crowded public areas to strengthen surveillance, are currently not working, according to local sources. Residents alleged that the lapse has made it impossible to obtain footage even when crimes occur, hampering police investigations.
Locals further claimed that despite repeated complaints to municipal authorities, no corrective action has been taken. There were also allegations that responsibility was being shifted onto a staff member tasked with monitoring the system.
Amid the surveillance gap, residents alleged a spate of thefts targeting government offices, hospitals, business establishments, and jewellery shops, raising concerns over law and order in the town.
When approached for comment, municipal authorities could not confirm the status of the CCTV network. Residents have demanded that the surveillance system be restored on an urgent basis, with the administration’s next steps now awaited.
