DHARMANAGAR: Tripura Pradesh Congress Committee (TPCC) President Ashish Kumar Saha on Saturday demanded the resignation of Power Minister Ratan Lal Nath, accusing him of failing to run the Power Department, during a three-hour mass sit-in organised by the Congress at the Netaji statue here.
The protest was staged against the alleged privatisation of power services, the smart meter project, and what Congress termed rampant corruption within the Tripura State Electricity Corporation.
Addressing the gathering, Saha alleged that ordinary consumers were being burdened with unjustified tariffs amid unchecked corruption, and accused the minister of hiding behind the State Regulatory Commission to mask government failures. “If the minister has failed to run the department, he must resign immediately,” Saha said, adding that the government showed no concern for public suffering.
He further alleged that the minister had repeatedly failed to give satisfactory answers when questioned by journalists and citizens over power-related grievances, calling it a sign of gross negligence, and said rising tariffs had made life harder for marginalised sections.
Also present were OBC Congress leader Manoranjan Nath, former TPCC president Dibachandra Rangkhal, district general secretary Tarun Saha, advocate Ajit Das, Digbijoy Chakraborty, and other senior party leaders.
Speakers unanimously demanded the immediate withdrawal of the smart meter project and improvement of power services, warning of intensified street agitation if the demands went unmet.
