AGARTALA: The holy occasion of Muharram was observed today across Tripura, with the Muslim community paying homage to the martyrdom of Hazrat Imam Hussain (RA) and his companions at Karbala.
For followers of Islam, Muharram holds deep significance as a day of grief, sacrifice and self-denial, commemorating the supreme sacrifice made by Hazrat Imam Hussain, the grandson of the Holy Prophet Hazrat Muhammad (PBUH), in defence of truth and justice.
A procession (Juloos) was taken out from the Border Gol Chakkar area in the capital, with members of the community participating in large numbers to mark the solemn occasion. Participants observed the day with prayers, religious gatherings, and recitations recalling the events of Karbala.
The day is observed with deep religious sentiment by the Shia and Sunni communities alike, with mosques and Imambaras across the state hosting special prayers and majlis (religious congregations) through the day.
Local administration is understood to have made necessary arrangements to ensure peaceful conduct of the processions across the capital and other parts of the state.
