KANCHANPUR: Police scored another major success in their anti-drug drive after a youth was detained in Kanchanpur with 9,500 Yaba tablets valued at an estimated Rs 40 lakh.
Acting on secret information, a joint team led by Kanchanpur Sub-Divisional Police Officer Utpalendu Debnath, along with Kanchanpur police station OC Srikanta Rudra Pal and personnel of the Assam Rifles, apprehended the youth, identified as Shankar Reang, near the Rabindranagar FCI godown. A motorbike was also seized from him during the operation.
SDPO Utpalendu Debnath confirmed the market value of the seized tablets. Police have registered a case under Section 31/26 KCP/PS/NDPS and launched an investigation.
According to sources, the arrested youth hails from the Sukanchhara area under Kanchanpur police station and is allegedly linked to the drug trade for a considerable period. It has initially emerged that the tablets were being transported from Kanchanpur to Manu in Dhalai district.
Police said further investigation is underway to trace the larger network behind the smuggling racket.
