BISHRAMGANJ: An auto-rickshaw stolen from outside Khumulung Kherengbar Hospital was recovered by Bishramganj police late Saturday night from a rubber plantation beside the national highway, near the new petrol pump in Bishramganj.
The vehicle, bearing registration number TR 01M 3805, was spotted by police as the thieves were reportedly attempting to remove its battery after abandoning it by the roadside. Police gave chase, and the gang fled into the jungle, allowing officers to recover the vehicle and bring it back to Bishramganj police station.
The auto belongs to Shakti Debbarma, a resident of Birendranagar in Jirania. On learning of the recovery, he rushed to the police station on Sunday along with family members.
According to the family, Debbarma had driven the auto to Kherengbar Hospital to deliver food for his nephew’s wife, who was scheduled to deliver a baby there. The vehicle was stolen from outside the hospital within just 10 minutes of his arrival.
Police are said to be investigating further to trace the thieves involved.
