AGARTALA: A fresh controversy has erupted in the Aralia Shalbon area here after locals allegedly uncovered an illicit liquor and narcotics racket operating out of a meat shop, following a scuffle reported the previous night.
According to Pratapgarh Yuba Morcha president Manish Chakraborty, two party workers, Biswajit Debnath and Binoy Debnath, were allegedly attacked by four to five men near a meat shop in the Shalbagh locality on Thursday night after requesting that bikes parked outside be moved.
Chakraborty further alleged that the shop had long been a front for an illegal trade in cholai (country liquor) and other intoxicants. Acting on these claims, police, along with local residents, reportedly raided the shop on Friday and recovered country liquor and narcotic substances. One person, identified as Prabir Majumder, was detained and taken to the College Tilla police station.
Police have launched an investigation into the matter. The veracity of the allegations and the nature of the recovered items are expected to be established once the probe concludes.
