Iran sharply condemned the United States on Thursday, accusing Washington of waging “economic terrorism” and committing “crimes against humanity” after the US announced sweeping new sanctions aimed at intensifying pressure on Tehran. The escalation comes as the Biden administration signals a more aggressive economic strategy, with officials arguing that sustained financial pressure could help prevent a wider military conflict in West Asia.
In a statement carried by Iranian state media, the Foreign Ministry said US sanctions “target the fundamental human rights of every Iranian citizen”, adding that those responsible “deserve trial and punishment” for imposing measures that have harmed livelihoods and access to essential goods. Tehran insists the sanctions violate international law and are designed to destabilise the country’s economy.
Washington, meanwhile, has urged allies — and notably China — to support its campaign to isolate Iran. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said the US is preparing new, far‑reaching sanctions, and pressed Beijing to cooperate, arguing that reopening the Strait of Hormuz is essential to stabilising global energy markets. Bessent noted that China receives around 50% of its energy supplies from the Gulf, suggesting that Beijing has strong incentives to work with Washington.
US officials believe that coordinated economic pressure could weaken Iran’s ability to sustain its regional military activities. The administration has openly stated that its goal is to “collapse” the Iranian government’s financial capacity, though it maintains that sanctions are intended to deter escalation rather than provoke conflict.
The latest measures come amid heightened tensions following missile incidents, maritime confrontations, and stalled diplomatic efforts. Iran continues to reject direct talks with Washington, insisting that sanctions must be lifted before negotiations resume.
