Green Menace, Grounded: Police Smash Lakh-Strong Cannabis Haul at Sonamura

SONAMURA:In a major crackdown on narcotics cultivation, police here seized and destroyed over one lakh cannabis (ganja) saplings along with a huge quantity of cannabis, officials said on Tuesday.

The operation, carried out following intelligence inputs about large-scale cannabis cultivation in the area, led police teams to the spot where the saplings were growing. Acting swiftly, personnel uprooted and destroyed the entire haul on-site to prevent any possibility of the contraband re-entering circulation.

Officials described the seizure as one of the biggest anti-narcotics operations conducted in the Sonamura region in recent times, underlining the scale of illegal cannabis cultivation that continues to be a challenge for law enforcement in parts of Tripura.

Police said further investigation is underway to identify those behind the cultivation and to trace the supply chain linked to the plantation. No arrests have been reported so far in connection with the seizure.

The success has been hailed as a significant step in the ongoing efforts to curb drug cultivation and trafficking in the state, with officials reiterating their commitment to continued vigilance against narcotics-related activities in border and rural belts.
