TELIAMURA: Two tribal youths were caught red-handed allegedly attempting to steal valuable copper wires from a telecom tower in the Duski Khamarbari area under Teliamura subdivision on Saturday night, police said.
The arrests come amid long-standing complaints of an active theft racket targeting telecom tower equipment across the subdivision, which has left telecom companies increasingly concerned over recurring losses of copper wire and other hardware.
To curb such incidents, telecom operators had deployed night-time guards at vulnerable sites. During one such patrol, guarding personnel spotted the two youths cutting wires atop an Airtel tower and apprehended them on the spot.
Upon interrogation, the duo allegedly admitted they had come with the intention of stealing the wires and other materials. They were subsequently handed over to Teliamura police station.
Telecom company representatives said a written complaint would be filed against the detained youths. No formal charges have been registered yet, and the accused have not had an opportunity to respond to the allegations.
The incident has triggered considerable concern among residents and telecom operators alike, reviving fears over the persistent theft of tower equipment in the region.
