AGARTALA: Chief Minister Dr. Manik Saha on Saturday formally inaugurated the Agartala-Karimganj-Agartala MEMU train service, flagging off the new service at a function held at Agartala Railway Station.
The launch is expected to significantly ease travel between Tripura’s capital and Assam’s Karimganj district, offering commuters a faster and more convenient rail option connecting the two regions.
Speaking at the event, Dr. Saha highlighted the importance of improved rail connectivity in strengthening ties between Tripura and neighbouring Assam, calling the new service a step forward in the region’s transport infrastructure development.
The ceremony was attended by state Transport Minister Sushanta Chowdhury, Member of Parliament Rajib Bhattacharjee, MLA Meena Rani Sarkar, along with several senior officials of the Northeast Frontier Railway.
Officials at the event noted that the introduction of the MEMU (Mainline Electric Multiple Unit) service is aimed at reducing travel time and providing a more comfortable, cost-effective option for daily commuters and long-distance travellers alike between the two towns.
Transport Minister Chowdhury reportedly stated that the state government would continue to push for expanded rail connectivity across Tripura, with more such services planned in the coming months to boost regional mobility and economic activity.
The new service is expected to benefit students, traders, and daily wage workers who frequently travel between Agartala and Karimganj for work, education, and commerce.
Railway authorities said the MEMU service would run on a regular schedule, with further details on timings and stoppages to be announced shortly.
