SABROOM: Sabroom police arrested two Bangladeshi nationals from the local railway station on Sunday evening, acting on confidential information, officials said.
The arrested youths were identified as Rifaq Hasan, 18, a resident of Srimantapur in Comilla, Bangladesh, and Tarek Hossain, 18, a resident of Hathazari in Chattogram, Bangladesh.
During preliminary interrogation, police learnt that the duo had illegally crossed the international border into India via Belonia, with the intention of travelling onward to Kolkata.
Both youths were produced before the Sabroom court on Monday, where further legal proceedings are underway.
Police said investigation into the matter is ongoing to ascertain the exact circumstances of their border crossing and any wider network that may have facilitated their movement.
The incident has once again brought into focus the porous nature of the India-Bangladesh border in the Sabroom sector, with security agencies on alert for similar attempts at illegal crossing.
