Agartala: Two men posing as Hindu sadhus were detained by West Agartala Police after they allegedly cheated a local youth and fled with his money in the heart of the city.
The complainant, Shubhajit Roy Chowdhury, said the incident occurred when the two men, reportedly from Uttar Pradesh, approached him seeking ₹100 for food. Moved by their request, he handed over the money. In return, the duo gave him a talisman (tabeez).
According to the victim, the men later asked how much cash he had in his wallet. Trusting them, he showed the money, following which they allegedly used a trick to take away the cash before disappearing.
Realising he had been cheated, Shubhajit began searching for the accused across different parts of Agartala. He eventually spotted the two men near Rabindra Bhavan and managed to detain them before alerting the police.
A team from West Agartala Police Station reached the spot and took both suspects into custody for questioning.
Police said Aadhaar cards recovered from the two men indicate that they are residents of Agra district in Uttar Pradesh. A case has been registered, and an investigation is underway to verify the allegations and ascertain whether the accused were involved in similar incidents elsewhere.
