Kailashahar:A toktok (auto-rickshaw) driver sustained critical injuries in a road accident at the Lakshmipur area here on Wednesday morning, triggering panic among local residents.
The injured driver has been identified as Kuton Malakar. According to eyewitnesses, Malakar was standing beside the road cleaning his toktok when a speeding Santro car, coming from the direction of Tillabazar, rammed into him and his vehicle. The impact was so severe that the toktok was flung into a roadside drain, while Malakar suffered grievous injuries.
Hearing his cries, local residents rushed to the spot and rescued him before rushing him to Unakoti District Hospital for treatment. His condition is reported to be critical.
In an attempt to escape the scene, the driver of the Santro reportedly tried to flee, but was caught and detained by enraged locals before he could get away. He too sustained injuries in the process and has since been admitted to the hospital.
