AGARTALA: A school teacher’s house in Anandanagar Para No. 5, under Srinagar police station, was reportedly burgled late Friday night, in what residents say is the latest in a string of theft incidents to hit the area.
According to the complaint, miscreants broke into the residence of school teacher Bopesh Debnath and allegedly made off with around 10 bhori of gold ornaments, two mobile phones, and cash worth Rs 10,000.
This is reportedly the third such incident in the locality in recent weeks, following earlier thefts at Anandanagar Girls’ Hostel and Anandanagar Ramakrishna Ashram roughly a fortnight ago. The recurrence of such incidents has left residents increasingly anxious about safety in the area.
Local residents alleged that despite police investigations being initiated after each incident, no significant breakthrough has been made either in recovering stolen property or apprehending those responsible, raising questions over the effectiveness of local policing.
Residents also alleged lapses in night-time security arrangements, claiming that while women police personnel are deployed for night patrols, senior officers including the officer-in-charge and second officer reportedly leave the station after 10 pm, making it difficult to reach them during emergencies.
Srinagar police station is yet to issue an official response to these allegations. Efforts are underway to obtain the administration’s version before further developments in the case.
