Sonamura:A deeply alarming situation has come to light at the Soramoni Anganwadi Centre located in Ward No. 2 of Sonamura Nagar Panchayat in the Thakurmura area, where nearly 16 to 17 young children are being forced to attend classes in a severely damaged building whose roof was blown away by a Nor’wester storm nearly three months ago. Despite repeated appeals to the authorities, no repair work has been undertaken, leaving children, parents and the teacher in a state of constant fear and anxiety.
The storm caused extensive damage to the roof of the centre, leaving the tin sheets dangerously loose and liable to fall at any moment. The teacher at the centre has already expressed her inability to take full responsibility for the safety of the children under such precarious conditions and has communicated the same to the parents.
Adding to the danger, a high-voltage electric cable has collapsed onto the roof of the centre, creating an extremely life-threatening situation for the young children who attend classes there daily. During heavy rain and storms, the children are left without any safe shelter whatsoever.
The condition of the centre has deteriorated to such an extent that mid-day meals can no longer be cooked on the premises. Food is instead being prepared at a neighbouring house and carried in for the children each day.
The matter has reportedly been brought to the attention of the Ward Commissioner, the CDPO office and the Nagar Panchayat on multiple occasions, yet no effective steps have been taken by the concerned authorities, drawing sharp criticism from local residents.
Residents are now urgently demanding immediate administrative intervention and emergency repair of the centre, warning that continued neglect could lead to a tragic and avoidable accident involving innocent children.
