BISHALGARH: A gold chain was snatched from a woman’s neck on the national highway adjacent to Bishalgarh College here on Wednesday afternoon, police said.
The victim, identified as Jagriti Chowdhury Paul, was travelling with her husband on a scooty from Subhash Nagar in Agartala to a relative’s residence in lower Bishalgarh when unidentified snatchers made off with a gold chain weighing approximately two buri (a local unit of weight) from her neck near the college stretch.
A case has been registered at Bishalgarh Police Station, and officers reportedly rushed to the spot upon receiving information about the incident.
Locals allege that incidents of chain-snatching and theft have been steadily increasing in the Bishalgarh area over the past several years, and have expressed concern over the frequency of such crimes, claiming inadequate police action has allowed the trend to continue unchecked. Residents also said they expect the district administration and state government to take note of the growing law-and-order concerns in the area.
Police have not yet issued an official statement on the specific allegations of negligence.
