UDAIPUR: Six months after a truck accident claimed the life of 60-year-old Sabita Saha and destroyed her family’s home near Netaji Subhash Bridge, the family alleges they are yet to receive permanent government assistance or rehabilitation.
On February 2 night, a speeding heavy truck lost control at Agriculture Chowmuhani and crashed into the Saha residence, reducing it to rubble. While other family members were rescued, Sabita Saha, asleep inside, was trapped under the debris and could not be saved. Senior officials, including SP Dr Kiran Kumar K, SDPO Debanjali Roy and SDM Tridip Sarkar, rushed to the spot as rescue operations were carried out.
Sabita’s son Raju Saha said the family received only a one-time payment of Rs 10,000, collectively from Minister Pranajit Singha Roy, Killa-Bagma MLA Rampada Jamatia, local pradhan Rita Bhowmik, and the power sub-station in-charge, with no further government support since. Having lost both his mother and his home, he has built a temporary shelter of tin and bamboo near the accident site, where he now lives with his wife and grandchild.
A compensation case against the truck’s insurer remains pending. The family has urged authorities to expedite due financial assistance and arrange permanent rehabilitation.
