AGARTALA: A delegation led by Jitendra Chowdhury, Leader of the Opposition in the Tripura Legislative Assembly, met the Governor on [date], demanding that the unnatural death of Director General of Police Anurag Dhankar be investigated by a sitting High Court judge.
Dhankar, a 1994-batch IPS officer, was found dead inside his office chamber at the Police Headquarters in Agartala earlier this month, in what authorities have described as a suspected case of suicide. He was rushed to G B Pant Hospital, where he was declared dead. A post-mortem examination and a police and forensic investigation have since been ordered into the circumstances of his death.
During the meeting, Chowdhury reportedly urged the Governor to ensure a transparent and impartial probe, asserting that only an inquiry conducted by a sitting High Court judge would instil public confidence given the sensitivity of the case and the seniority of the officer involved.
The opposition’s move comes amid growing political attention on the matter, with several parties, including the CPI(M), having already approached the Governor separately over the same issue in recent days.
Further developments are awaited as pressure mounts on the state government to order a judicial inquiry into the DGP’s death.
