Melaghar: Residents of Wards 7 and 8 under Melaghar Municipality have raised strong objections over the poor condition of a 100-metre connecting road off the Melaghar-Sonamura main road, alleging years of civic neglect despite regular tax collection.
The stretch, residents said, has been left in a state of disrepair for a prolonged period, riddled with potholes and waterlogged with mud, forcing locals to navigate it at considerable risk daily. Residents alleged that neither the municipal authorities nor Ward councillor Gurupada Roy, who represents the area, have taken adequate steps to address the issue despite repeated appeals.
Locals further alleged that promises made ahead of elections have not translated into action, with representatives reportedly unavailable after polls.
In protest, a group of local women blocked the road on Monday, standing amid the mud and waterlogged stretch to press their demand for immediate repair. They called for the road to be upgraded into a properly planned route with adequate drainage, rather than undergo temporary patchwork.
The protesters warned of a larger agitation in front of the municipal office if action is not taken soon. Municipal authorities are yet to respond to the allegations.
