Assault on Youth Congress duo sparks police station gherao in North Tripura
Agartala: Political tension gripped the Chandrapur Club area under Dharmanagar Police Station on Saturday night after two Youth Congress workers were allegedly assaulted by unidentified miscreants, triggering angry protests from party leaders and supporters.
A large group of Congress workers, led by district leaders, staged a demonstration and gheraoed Dharmanagar Police Station, demanding immediate arrests. Protesters submitted a written complaint calling for a fair investigation and strict legal action against those responsible.
The two injured workers were admitted to Dharmanagar District Hospital for treatment; their condition was not immediately known.
North Tripura District Congress president Nirupam Dey alleged the attack was a deliberate bid to intimidate opposition workers, calling it a sign of worsening law and order and demanding a neutral probe with exemplary punishment for the culprits.
Senior police officials intervened after several hours, assuring party leaders of action, following which Congress temporarily withdrew the gherao. The party warned of a larger district-wide agitation if arrests were not made within 24 hours.
Police confirmed a case has been registered and investigation is underway. Additional personnel have been deployed in the area as a precaution.
