Left Youth Organisations Stage Protest Over Smuggling of Cough Syrup via GPO

Agartala: Four Left-leaning youth organisations staged a protest demonstration today in front of Agartala’s General Post Office (GPO), alleging that intoxicating cough syrups are being smuggled into the state almost regularly through the postal service.

Protesters claimed that the GPO has increasingly become a conduit for the illegal transport of banned cough syrup, widely used as a substance of abuse, raising serious concerns about its impact on the state’s youth. They demanded strict and immediate action against all individuals and networks involved in facilitating this illegal trade.

Holding placards and raising slogans, members of the youth organisations called upon postal and law enforcement authorities to tighten scrutiny of parcels and packages to curb the smuggling racket. They alleged that lapses in monitoring at the postal department have allowed such contraband to slip through unchecked over an extended period.

The protesters urged the administration to launch a thorough investigation into the matter and ensure exemplary punishment for those found responsible, regardless of their position or influence.

The demonstration concluded peacefully, with organisers warning of intensified agitation if concrete action is not taken soon to stop the misuse of postal services for drug trafficking in the state.
