TELIAMURA: The Khowai River has swollen dangerously following two to three days of continuous heavy rainfall, triggering flood-like conditions in several low-lying, riverside localities of the Teliamura Municipal Council area and forcing authorities to open seven relief camps.
River water reportedly entered homes in Shantinagar (Ward 6), Dashomighat (Wards 4 and 5), Netaji Nagar (Ward 9), as well as riverside regions of Trishabari, Moharchhara, and Kalyanpur under the Gram Panchayat. Residents were seen shifting furniture and valuables to safer locations amid growing anxiety over rising water levels.
Municipal Council Chairman Rupak Sarkar and Deputy CEO Pradip Kumar Sarkar visited the affected areas to assess the situation. The Sub-Division’s disaster management team and Fire and Emergency Services have been placed on standby.
Sarkar confirmed that seven relief camps have been opened within the municipal area, along with one at Moharchhara School, with arrangements for food, clean drinking water, and other essentials. As of the last report, 10-15 displaced families from Dashomighat had taken shelter at Shishu Malancha School.
Sub-Divisional Magistrate Apurba Krishna Chakraborty said the administration is prioritising the safety of life and property, urging at-risk residents to move to shelters without delay and follow official guidelines.
With rain forecast to continue, authorities warned the situation could worsen further and appealed to the public to remain alert without panic.
