UNAKOTI: Minister of Social Education and Social Welfare Tinku Roy inspected the under-construction new district jail at Jaruiltala on Friday afternoon, as the government moves to speed up work that had remained stalled for a long period.
Accompanied by officials of the concerned department, Roy told reporters after the visit that the long-pending construction has now been given fresh momentum, with a target set to complete the work by December this year. He said detailed discussions had been held with departmental officials to ensure the deadline is met.
The Minister also inspected the existing district jail in Kailashahar town during the same visit. Officials discussed plans to construct a new boundary wall to fully secure the jail premises.
Roy further said that once the new Jaruiltala facility becomes operational and inmates are shifted there, the government will prioritise public opinion from Kailashahar residents on how the site of the current jail can be repurposed for development work in the public interest.
The inspection marks a renewed push by the state government to resolve long-delayed infrastructure projects in Unakoti district.
