KHAYERPUR : Panic gripped riverside localities on Sunday as the Haora River’s water level rose above the danger mark, flooding several areas of the 5-Khayerpur Assembly constituency. Residents said the water began surging around 4 am, catching many off guard.
The Baldakhal area was among the worst affected, with water entering homes and roads and submerging low-lying stretches. Locals were seen shifting essential household belongings to safer ground as fears grew that the situation could deteriorate further if water levels kept rising.
The flooding is not confined to Baldakhal alone. Reports indicate rising water in Ranibazar, Chaudda Debtabari and other low-lying, river-adjacent areas, with waterlogged roads disrupting movement in several pockets.
Residents have urged the administration to urgently assess the situation and act. Their demands include advance warnings for those in low-lying areas, arrangements for safe shelters, and relief materials kept on standby in case of further flooding.
With the river’s water level continuing to climb, both the administration and local residents are keeping a close watch, amid fears that a wider stretch of the region could be inundated if the rise does not subside soon.
