Belonia: A constable attached to the Government Railway Police (GRP), identified as Jatindra Das, was produced before the Belonia Court on Wednesday in connection with a cannabis seizure case that has sparked widespread attention.

The incident came to light on Tuesday when police recovered several kilograms of suspected cannabis from a bag inside a white vehicle bearing registration number TR07G02267 near the Belonia Railway Station premises. One individual was detained during the operation, while three others reportedly managed to escape when police attempted to search the vehicle.

According to reports, the detained suspect was later taken to the GRP police station by a police officer from Belonia Police Station along with an Intelligence Bureau (IB) official. However, the suspect allegedly escaped from police custody, raising serious questions about security lapses and the handling of the case.

Following media reports on the incident, senior police officials reportedly took immediate notice. A team of senior GRP officers from Agartala arrived in Belonia and launched an inquiry into the matter.

During the course of the investigation and subsequent searches, police allegedly recovered cannabis from the room of GRP constable Jatindra Das. He was subsequently arrested in connection with the case.

After completing the necessary legal formalities and investigation procedures, the investigating officer of the GRP produced the accused constable before the Belonia Court on Wednesday afternoon.
