Kailashahar: The North District and Sessions Court has sentenced a man identified as Sizarul SK to 10 years of rigorous imprisonment for trafficking a huge quantity of cannabis from Tripura to Assam. He has also been fined Rs 1 lakh, with a further two months in jail in default of payment.
The case dates back to November 15, 2022, when police, led by SI Usharani Debnath, intercepted a 12-wheeler truck at the Naka Point of Churaibari Police Station during a routine check. Two occupants, Phulshad SK and Sizarul SK, both residents of Murshidabad, West Bengal, were questioned, leading the driver to admit to carrying banned substances. A subsequent search recovered 84 bundles of cannabis weighing 560 kg 600 grams from beneath the seat and the vehicle’s roof.
A case was registered under the NDPS Act, with the investigation initiated by then-OC Dhrubajyoti Debbarma and the chargesheet later filed by SI Piyush Kanti Saha. The Special NDPS Court today convicted Sizarul SK based on evidence and testimony presented during trial.
Co-accused Phulshad SK, who had been released on bail, has since gone absconding, prompting the court to issue an arrest warrant against him. Government lawyer Partha Pal furnished details of the case to the media.
