AGARTALA: Dr D.Y. Patil, former Governor of Tripura, passed away in Kolhapur, Maharashtra on Tuesday at the age of 90, bringing to an end a long public life marked by contributions to education, healthcare, philanthropy and governance.
Chief Minister Dr Manik Saha expressed grief over Dr Patil’s death.
A veteran educationist and institution builder, Dr Patil served as Governor of Tripura, Bihar and West Bengal. He was born on October 22, 1935, in Ambap village of Kolhapur district. He was the founder of the D Y Patil Group, which today runs more than 150 educational institutions across the country.
He began his public career as a member of the Kolhapur Municipal Council before serving as an MLA from Maharashtra, and was later honoured with the Padma Shri award in 1991 for social work.
Tributes poured in from political leaders, educationists and former students across the country, who remembered him as a visionary institution builder and philanthropist.
