AGARTALA: The Tripura Electricity Consumers Association has intensified its campaign against various electricity charges and the ongoing smart meter rollout in the state, submitting a fresh memorandum to the Tripura Electricity Regulatory Commission (TERC) on Tuesday.
A delegation of the association visited the TERC office and placed its demands before a commission member, as the chairman was not present at the time. The association’s central demand is that since the government has announced a 100 per cent subsidy against the recently hiked electricity tariff, the additional charge should not appear in consumers’ bills at all. Instead, they urged that the hiked amount be paid directly by the government to the Tripura State Electricity Corporation Limited (TSECL), sparing consumers the burden.
Through the memorandum, the delegation submitted a total of seven demands, calling on the commission to intervene and ensure withdrawal of the increased tariff, restore consumers’ freedom to choose their meter system, and halt the forced installation of smart meters across the state.
The protest comes amid growing public anger over inflated electricity bills and smart meter charges, which have triggered similar deputations and demonstrations in several parts of Tripura in recent months.
