Udaipur: The lifeless body of a 70-year-old woman was recovered from a drain in the Rajarbagh Sukantapalli area on Wednesday, sending shockwaves through the locality.
The deceased has been identified as Ranu Bala Saha, a resident of the same area. According to preliminary information, her body was found lying in a drain situated beside a wooded patch close to her home.
Local sources said the elderly woman had a daily routine of visiting that spot to collect “lati,” a type of edible green commonly foraged in the area. It is suspected that she may have fallen into the drain while going about this routine, resulting in her death, though the exact circumstances remain unclear.
News of the discovery spread quickly, drawing a large crowd of concerned residents to the scene. Family members and neighbours expressed deep shock over the sudden tragedy.
On being alerted, police personnel rushed to the spot and began an investigation. The body was sent for post-mortem examination to determine the precise cause of death. Officials have not ruled out an accidental fall but are also examining whether any other factors were involved.
Residents have called for safety measures around the drain, noting the risk it poses to elderly people who frequent the adjoining wooded area.
