Dhankar Death Probe: Police Say Investigation Nearing Completion

AGARTALA: Tripura Police have said that the investigation into the death of Anurag Dhankar, the state’s former Director General of Police, is progressing and is expected to be completed soon.

Dhankar, a 1994-batch IPS officer of the Tripura cadre, was found dead on July 20 at the state police headquarters in Agartala. Police registered a case of unnatural death, and his body was sent to GB Hospital for post-mortem examination. He had taken charge as DGP in May 2025.

The state government later formed a Special Investigation Team (SIT) to probe the case, with West Tripura District Superintendent of Police Namit Pathak leading the inquiry, according to UNI.

The opposition CPI(M) has expressed dissatisfaction with the SIT and has demanded an investigation overseen by a sitting Tripura High Court judge. A party delegation led by Leader of the Opposition Jitendra Chaudhury met the Governor, citing concerns about impartiality.

Police have not yet announced any findings. The cause and circumstances of the death are yet to be officially established.

Dhankar had earlier served with the CBI and headed the SIT that reinvestigated the 1984 anti-Sikh riots.
