TELIAMURA: Teliamura MLA Kalyani Saha Roy on Monday visited the home of Santana Bala Das, an elderly resident of Gamaibari area, days after media reports highlighted the woman’s struggle with extreme hardship and neglect.
The MLA personally inquired about Santana’s wellbeing and reviewed her overall situation, after which she provided food items, daily essentials, and cash assistance on the spot.
Local sources had earlier said Santana’s old-age pension, one of her key sources of livelihood, had remained stopped for a long time, making it difficult for her to meet basic needs. The MLA said the pension appeared to have been halted due to an administrative issue and assured that the matter would be reviewed and resolved swiftly. She also promised initiatives to ensure a livable home, electricity connection, and a toilet for the elderly woman.
Teliamura Municipal Council’s Ward 15 Councillor Nitin Kumar Saha, who accompanied the MLA, also assured support. The MLA additionally visited another widowed elderly woman in the same area facing similar hardship.
Residents welcomed the swift response, calling it a humane gesture from their elected representative.
