Agartala: The first-ever “Chakma Language and Script Day” was celebrated today at Rabindra Shatabarshiki Bhavan here, marked by the ceremonial lighting of the lamp.
The event was attended by Minister Sushanta Chowdhury and Minister Santana Chakma, along with other dignitaries and members of the Chakma community.
The celebration marks a significant step in recognising and preserving the Chakma language and its distinct script, which holds deep cultural and historical importance for the Chakma community in Tripura and the wider Northeast region.
Speaking on the occasion, the ministers are learnt to have highlighted the state government’s commitment to safeguarding the linguistic heritage of Tripura’s indigenous communities and promoting awareness of the Chakma script among younger generations.
The programme featured cultural presentations and discussions aimed at fostering pride in the Chakma linguistic identity, with community members and scholars also participating in the event.
Officials indicated that the observance of Chakma Language and Script Day is expected to become an annual feature going forward, with further initiatives planned to support the documentation and teaching of the script in the state.
