Mohanpur: Kali Bazar, the largest government market under Bamutia Block and a key vegetable trading hub for the entire Mohanpur subdivision, is in a state of severe neglect, with traders and buyers alleging complete administrative indifference.
Despite serving thousands of buyers and sellers daily, the market’s only Sulabh toilet has remained unusable for nearly two years due to lack of maintenance, overrun by overgrowth and emitting a foul odour. Even light rain leaves the market waterlogged, while the fish and meat market sheds and surrounding areas remain buried under heaps of garbage, with no cleanliness drive ever conducted at the site.
Traders alleged that despite the market falling under the jurisdiction of East Bamutia Gram Panchayat, repeated complaints have yielded no action, with the market committee accused of playing no role in upkeep.
A local fish trader, speaking to the media, demanded urgent restoration of the toilet facility, offering that traders themselves would take charge of its maintenance if authorities made it functional again.
Residents say the market’s deteriorating condition poses daily risks to buyers and sellers, and have urged the subdivision, block, and panchayat administrations to act without further delay.
