NEW DELHI: A multi-storey residential building collapsed in the Seemapuri area of northeast Delhi on Wednesday afternoon, with several people feared trapped under the debris.
The Delhi Fire Service received a call around 3:30 pm, after which fire tenders and Delhi Police teams rushed to the spot and began search and rescue operations. Eight people have been rescued so far, according to a report. Eyewitnesses said local residents pulled out four to five people before emergency services arrived. The injured were taken to Rajiv Gandhi Hospital.
A resident, Salim, said 15 to 20 people lived in the building and at least 12 were still feared trapped. He said his daughter and son-in-law had been rescued.
Municipal Corporation of Delhi officials said an adjoining structure was also damaged, and the boundary wall of a nearby mosque collapsed under the impact.
Traffic was affected around Seemapuri Gol Chakkar, DLF Bhopura and adjoining roads. Police advised people to avoid the area, not to gather near the site, and to follow directions from traffic personnel.
The cause of the collapse and the number of casualties have not been confirmed. Rescue operations were continuing at last report.
