5.6 Lakh Yaba Tablets Recovered, One Trafficker Arrested
Silchar: Assam Rifles has achieved a major success against an inter-state drug trafficking network. In a joint operation with the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI), Silchar, Yaba tablets worth approximately Rs 168 crore have been seized.
The special operation was conducted from the night of August 25 to August 26 in the Jujang Hills, a general area of Lakshmipur in Assam’s Cachar district. A total of 5.6 lakh Yaba tablets were recovered during the operation. The seized narcotics weighed approximately 60 kg, with an estimated market value of Rs 168 crore. One person, suspected to be a drug trafficker involved in the case, has also been apprehended.
A Tata truck used to transport the drugs was also seized during the operation. Preliminary investigation has revealed that the recovered narcotics were being brought from the neighbouring state of Manipur into Assam. Investigating agencies initially believe the drugs were then to be smuggled to various parts of the country via National Highway NH-37.
According to preliminary assessments by Assam Rifles and the DRI, the inter-state drug trafficking network was attempting to use Cachar and Sribhumi districts as transit corridors to deliver narcotics to various parts of the Indian mainland. The incident has also brought to light the well-organised and extensive nature of the trafficking network.
The apprehended individual, along with the seized narcotics and other materials, has been handed over to the relevant authorities for further legal action and investigation.
This massive recovery of drugs worth approximately Rs 168 crore is being viewed as a major setback for the inter-state drug trafficking network. Assam Rifles has stated that operations against trafficking networks will be further intensified by identifying drug trafficking routes across the Northeast.
This operation is also a significant example of the effectiveness of the coordinated anti-narcotics operations conducted jointly by Assam Rifles and the DRI. It has been stated that such operations by law enforcement agencies will continue in the coming days to protect the youth of Northeast India from the grip of drugs and to dismantle trafficking networks.
