Prime Minister Narendra Modi has arrived in Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan to attend the 26th Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) Summit, marking a key moment in India’s engagement with Eurasian partners. Modi’s two‑day visit focuses on India’s priorities in security, connectivity and regional stability, with several high‑level bilateral meetings scheduled on the sidelines.
Modi was received at the airport by Kasymaliev Adylbek Aleshovich, chairman of the Kyrgyz Cabinet of Ministers, and welcomed with a yoga performance and Indian cultural dance, reflecting the strong cultural ties between the two nations. A video shared by PTI showed Modi interacting warmly with performers and officials during the ceremony.
During the summit, Modi is expected to meet Russian President Vladimir Putin and Kyrgyz President Sadyr Zhaparov, with discussions likely to cover regional security, counter‑terrorism, energy cooperation and connectivity projects. The SCO, now a 10‑member grouping, is marking 25 years since its founding in 2001 by China, Russia, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan and Uzbekistan. India and Pakistan joined in 2017, Iran in 2023, and Belarus in 2024.
In his departure statement, Modi said India aims to advance a regional vision built on “security, connectivity and opportunity”, and reaffirmed India’s commitment to working with SCO partners for a region free from terrorism, separatism and extremism. The summit comes at a time of shifting geopolitical dynamics across Eurasia, making India’s participation strategically significant.
